Jackson is a Senior Staff at Simpson Gumpertz and Heger’s Building Technology group in Washington, DC. Mr. Jackson graduated from Penn State University with degrees in both architecture and structural engineering and has more than 14 years of experience in façade and building enclosure design. He applies his creative and technical skills to the design and engineering of innovative facade systems, having worked on a variety of projects both domestically and abroad, with particular expertise in curtain walls, double skin facades, structural glass, and computational design. He has given numerous presentations on facade design and is a member of the AIA and ASTM Subcommittee E06.52 – Glass Use in Buildings. 8:30 – 9:35 1. Transparency: Innovative Glazing Systems in Our Nation’s Capital Glass and glazing systems have come a long way in DC, from punched windows and stick-built curtain walls of the past to contemporary unitized all-glass curtain walls and specialty custom glazing systems. This panel will explore the many facets of architectural design, engineering, and construction of modern glazing systems in the Washington, DC market. Presenters Bradford Carpenter Principal SGH BIO Brad Carpenter is a Principal in Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc.’s Building Technology group. He specializes in the design and integration of complex building enclosure systems including waterproofing, air and water barriers, cladding, and fenestration systems, with a focus on design efficiency, constructability, and performance. He closely collaborates with designers and regularly leverages cross-disciplinary capabilities at SGH to develop creative and thoughtful solutions to design challenges. Jim Bald Operations Director Harmon BIO Bald is Director of Operations for Harmon’s Mid-Atlantic region, managing the preconstruction and operations groups. Harmon specializes in the design, manufacturing, and installation of custom curtain wall. Bald has helped build projects such as FMC Tower and CHOP Schuylkill Office in Philadelphia, and Alexander Court, City Center Condos, USCG Headquarters, and GWU Science and Engineering Building in Washington, DC. Laura Croce Associate Shalom Baranes Associates BIO Since joining SBA in 2007, Ms. Croce has had experience in a wide range of projects, including master planning, commercial office and multi-family residential design. In her role as Lead Designer, Ms. Croce has been successful in shepherding projects through complex zoning and design approval processes in Washington, DC and Maryland. Opacity: Beyond the Bricks and Mortar—Envelope Performance in Context What makes a modern exterior wall system unique and stand out amongst the concrete boxes and mass masonry walls of Washington, DC’s past? This panel will take a fresh look at opaque facade systems, from barrier walls to rainscreen cavity walls and everything in between, and how these systems are designed for performance in the local climate and help to achieve the overall design aspirations of the building facade. Presenters Martina Driscoll Principal WJE BIO Since joining Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates in 1997, Ms. Driscoll has been involved in a wide variety of projects including forensic investigation of existing facilities, repair document preparation and oversight during implementation, material failure investigation and repair, and design peer review and building enclosure commissioning (BECx) on several newly constructed projects. Kevin Gannon Director — Program Development TAKTL BIO Kevin Gannon, RA, LEED AP, is Director of Program Development for TAKTL, LLC. As a founding partner at three architecture firms, he has over thirty years of experience, completing award-winning buildings for university, non-profit, and commercial clients. Before joining TAKTL in 2013, Kevin was the Regional Program Manager–Africa for Architecture for Humanity based in Cape Town, South Africa. John Whitaker Senior Associate Quinn Evans Architects BIO John Whitaker brings expertise in historic architecture, preservation technology and historic building documentation. Connectivity: Where Transparency and Opacity Meet The transition between transparent and opaque is a cornerstone of modern facade design and inextricably link one system to the other. This panel will discuss the critical interface between these systems and the careful attention to detail required not only to ensure air, water, vapor, and thermal continuity, but to allow for differential movement, tolerances of the construction trades, and to meet the architectural design intent where cladding meets glazing.
